Chapter 16 Cupid's Desire

Jaxon

As I arrived back at the pack house, I didn't even bother to find Don. I needed to check on my little mate. I wasn't sure what I would say to her after our last conversation, but I knew what I had to do. I had to break down every wall she had put up between us. I was more determined than ever to show her that everything she thought she knew about me wasn't true. I just needed a chance to show her who I really was. I knew I had to let down my guard and let Adeline in. This would be difficult for both of us. After my father's death, I had made sure to keep my emotions under wraps. I was scared to get hurt, or worse, to hurt someone else.

As I approached the door of the guest room where she was, a swift wave of her scent hit me hard. My wolf was delighted as he chanted, "mate!" When I didn't hear any signs of movement on the other side of the door, I decided to peek in, in case she was asleep.

I twisted the knob, which I had almost broken hours earlier, and there she was, sleeping like an angel. She had one leg tossed over the covers and was wearing a black tracksuit. The sight of her ass in those pants made my jeans tighten. I held back the urge to cup that round ass of hers; I wanted nothing more than to slide my shaft against it. I bent down and kissed her forehead. Shocks amplified through me as my lips met her smooth skin.

As I began to rise from the bedside and start my search for Beta Don, I heard a murmur escape my mate's lips. "Jaxon... mmm." My heart felt so full hearing her drop the formality and simply call me by my name. The gentle tone she used made me wonder if she had been dreaming about me. A sense of pride overcame me at the thought that she might have feelings for me too. I just wanted to hear my name slip from her lips over and over again.

She reached out, taking me by surprise, grabbed the back of my neck, and pulled me in. I almost toppled right on top of her. My quick reflexes pushed me over to the other side of my mate without squashing her flat. Shocked at her reaction and realizing she was very much still asleep, I reached over and grabbed her waist, pulling her closer to me. Her addictive scent took over my wolf; we were beaming with happiness to be this close to our mate.

Suddenly, she turned over and laid her head on my chest. I could feel her heartbeat slow to match mine. As our heartbeats matched, our breaths slowed and followed suit.

I mind-linked Don, "Donny boy, all is well. We will talk in the morning," and I quickly cut the connection before he could flood me with questions about my whereabouts and what I could possibly be doing at this hour.

I felt my eyes start to doze off with my mate securely resting on my chest when I noticed her whimpering in her sleep. I looked down at her, the moonlight shadowing her softly defined face. Suddenly, she began to flail her arms, as if she was attacking me in her sleep. I gently woke her up, trying to ease the pain from her evident nightmare, "Shh, baby, it's alright. It's just a dream. I've got you, Addie," I spoke softly into her neck. My arm tightened around her to comfort her while I inhaled her scent. It was my favorite smell; I didn't know it was possible to be so eluded by a scent. She tensed as she opened her eyes, confusion pouring out of them.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" Her tone was demanding an answer. A faint aroma of alcohol floated throughout the room. I peered over and noticed a cart with multiple bottles of wine on top. Three bottles were already empty. My wolf scowled at the thought that we should have been there enjoying dinner with her—not my sister Sophia. I was partially jealous that she had gotten to spend time with my mate.
