Suddenly, he heard a powerful violin from the smoke. Maks woke up after hearing the violin. Aleksei looked at Maks and then they both looked at the smoke. Aleksei passed the books to Maks and got up. He walked into the smoke and the voice of the violin got louder. He looked through the burning books. Among them was a golden book which wasn't burning but was glowing golden.
He pulled it out of the shelf and realised that it wasn't a book but a golden box. It was hot to touch. The voice seemed to be coming from it but as soon as he touched the box, the voice stopped.
He stared at the box which resembled a music box except for the voice it produced. It read in Latin,
"The living memories of the Earl, Avgustin Obolensky, lady Laura Obolensky, their son Evgeni Obolensky and daughter Vierne Obolensky."
So, was that an album? He opened the box slowly. It was empty. Aleksei was about to close it when he heard faint music and as the music grew louder, the smoke around him disappeared.
Laura was playing the piano and Avgustin was playing the violin while standing inside the rose garden, right before the sparkling fountain. Their instruments were white, resembling their platinum hair. Evgeni sat beside his mother, looking at her fingers gently push the keys of the piano.
The floor tiles were white and blue roses surrounded them. After the piece finished, he got up and clapped. They looked at each other and smiled. The lady maid and the valet stood outside the garden. The lady maid had skin as black as ebony and black hair, black eyes. The valet had skin as white as snow, silver hair and silver-grey eyes. They both bowed, "Dinner is ready,"
"Well then," Avgustin loosened the bow and wrapped the violin back into its case. He kept it beside the piano and both the violin and the piano disappeared into thin air.
"Let's have some food," Laura picked Evgeni into her arms and they walked into the mansion. The mansion was decorated with blue tiles and silver gemstones. It looked grand and extravagant. They sat at the table and Laura fed Evgeni.
"Feline, you've got Evgeni's medicines?" She asked and the lady maid passed her a tonic and a spoon. Laura poured the medicine into the spoon and brought it near Evgeni's face. He pulled his face away,
"No, medicine is bad. Tastes awful!"
"And here I thought Evgeni was a brave, young boy," Avgustin said.
"But alas, he's scared of something as tiny as medicines!"
"I am not scared!" Evgeni took his tonic and made an ugly face.
"There there," His mother picked him up, "Let's put you to bed now."
They walked through the halls of the mansion while the valet left with Avgustin towards his room.
She pressed Evgeni on a huge bed and kissed his forehead. She looked at the pendant around his neck, with his name on it. She smiled and looked into his eyes, "Mama,"
"Yes?"
"Sing me that song again," Evgeni requested.
"You like it?"
"Yes,"
"Well, you should sing it too. We can sing a duet,"
"I like listening,"
"Okay then,"
Laura sang the song to him and Evgeni soon fell asleep among the silk pillows. She got up and closed the door of his room quietly.
Meanwhile, the valet undressed Avgustin, "My Lord, the assassins will be here soon. The villagers told us to run away as fast as we can."
"Let's leave tomorrow morning, Lynn. Tell the coachman to wake up early. We'll move to Siberia. I've bought a new mansion there."
"Yes, my lord," The valet removed his boots and Avgustin lay on his bed, "You can go now,"
He bowed and left.
Laura soon came into the room and lay beside him, "Is Evgeni asleep?"
"Yes," She replied.
"Wake up early tomorrow. We'll leave for Siberia while it's still dark."
"Do we need to go?"
"For now. The snow queen has sent her assassins. They are after Evgeni, we can't keep him in Moscow for long. We'll be back here by next summer,"
The next morning at three, the valet and the lady maid knocked ferociously on their door. Laura and Avgustin got up and looked at each other, "Come in," Avgustin said.
They both came inside and bowed.
"What is it?" Avgustin rubbed his eyes.
"The assassins are here in Moscow, my lord. They'll reach the mansion soon," The valet said.
"What?!" Laura gasped.
Avgustin got down from his bed, "We have to leave now," He wore his shirt, "Laura, get Evgeni."
Laura ran out of the room and reached Evgeni's room. She picked him up from his bed and held him in her arms. He was fast asleep.
"Take the wagon out. We are leaving, now!"
The lady maid and the valet transformed into a black and a white horse respectively. The coachman tied them to the wagon while Laura and Avgustin climbed inside it. Evgeni was sleeping inside his mother's arms. They left the mansion immediately and travelled for one whole day towards Siberia.
When they reached the town of Yakutsk, they saw that the assassins had found them and were right behind them. The town was hit by a strong blizzard that evening. The path was covered with snow. Ice crystals were flying in the wind and it was hard to see in the dark.
