When they were gone, the silver light gradually faded. Derek pulled me into his arms, his body whole and healed.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his hands gently examining me for injuries.
I nodded, still stunned by what had happened. "That was..."
"Incredible," he finished. His eyes searched mine with new intensity. "I can feel you—here." He touched his chest. "Your emotions, your strength."
I understood what he meant. Something of Derek now lived inside me—a warm, steady presence in my mind. Not intrusive, but comforting, like a hand holding mine in the dark.
"We need to go," I said, suddenly remembering our purpose. "Victor is escaping."
Derek nodded, retrieving his backpack with the evidence. "He won't get far. Not now."
As we hurried through the tunnels, I marveled at our new connection. Each time our hands brushed, images and emotions flowed between us—Derek's determination, his fierce protectiveness, his love for me. And he must be feeling mine as well—my hope, my fear, my growing love for him.
"Is it always like this?" I asked as we climbed the stone steps back to the surface.
Derek squeezed my hand. "It will settle with time. Become more... manageable. But the connection never fades."
We emerged into the night air, the full moon hanging low and bright above the trees. Derek pulled me close, his lips finding mine in a kiss that seemed to seal our bond even further.
"No regrets?" he asked when we finally broke apart.
I touched his face, feeling the echo of his emotions through our bond. "None. Whatever comes next, we face it together."
Hand in hand, we turned toward the mansion, where the council—and Victor—awaited. Our separate quests for vengeance had become something greater: a shared journey toward justice and a future neither of us had dared to imagine.
The Mate bond hummed between us, silver and strong. We were no longer alone in our fight. We were one.

The forest seemed to hold its breath as Derek and I emerged from the tunnels, our newly formed Mate bond humming between us like an electric current. The full moon bathed everything in silver light, making the trees and undergrowth glow with an otherworldly radiance.
I felt different—stronger, more complete. Derek's presence in my mind was like a warm hearth on a cold night, comforting and steady. Through our bond, I could sense his amazement mirroring my own.
"Is it always this intense?" I whispered, my fingers still intertwined with his.
Derek shook his head, wonder in his eyes. "The elders speak of the Mate bond as powerful, but this..." He trailed off, searching for words. "I think it's your silver wolf. It's amplifying everything."
We stood in the small clearing, the entrance to the tunnels now hidden once more beneath the earth. The evidence against Victor was secure in Derek's backpack, but we both knew our immediate danger wasn't over.
"We need to get back to the mansion," Derek said, his thumb tracing circles on my palm. "The council meeting—"
A twig snapped in the darkness. We both tensed, instantly alert. Through our bond, I felt Derek's protective instinct surge, and I knew he could sense my fear and determination in return.
"They're surrounding us," he whispered, his enhanced senses detecting what I couldn't yet perceive. "At least six of them."
I reached for Silver, ready to shift at a moment's notice. "Victor?"
"I don't think so. His scent isn't among them." Derek's eyes scanned the treeline. "These are his followers, though."
