Chapter 11

"The eastern forest," Derek murmured. "That's where my father used to take me hunting."

I continued reading, each entry growing more urgent until I reached the final one, dated just days before my father's death.

*June 18 - Victor knows we're onto him. He's threatened James directly. I've sent my evidence to contacts outside the pack, but I fear it won't be enough. If anything happens to me, Derek must know the truth. Victor is creating silver-resistant warriors, but the process is flawed. Without a natural silver wolf's blood, the subjects eventually go mad. He means to use James and his daughter. I cannot allow this. Tomorrow we make our stand.*

Tomorrow never came for either of our fathers.

I closed the journal, tears blurring my vision. "They were trying to stop him together."

Derek's hand found mine. "And now we'll finish what they started."

He pulled me to my feet and led me to a large map on the wall. "The tunnels he mentioned—I know where they are. The evidence must still be there."

Hope sparked within me. "If we find it before sunset—"

"We can expose Victor for what he truly is," Derek finished.

The setting sun cast long shadows through the windows, bathing the room in golden light. Derek turned to me, his eyes reflecting the dying sunlight.

"Our fathers were allies," he said softly. "Now we are too."

But we were more than allies. The pull between us had grown stronger with each passing hour. As if reading my thoughts, Derek stepped closer, his hand gently cupping my cheek.

"Lena," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "Whatever happens tonight, I need you to know something."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "What?"

"From the moment I saw you—truly saw you—I knew you were meant to be mine." His thumb traced my lower lip. "Not just because of the Mate bond, but because every part of me recognizes every part of you."

The moonlight streaming through the window bathed us in silver light, as if the Moon Goddess herself was blessing this moment. Derek leaned down, his lips hovering just above mine.

"I will protect you with my life," he promised. "No matter what comes."

And then he kissed me. Unlike our first kiss in the forest, this one was unhurried, deep and full of promise. His arms encircled me, pulling me against his chest as if he could shield me from the world. I melted into him, the Mate bond between us humming with energy and rightness.

When we finally broke apart, breathless and flushed, the room had grown darker. Sunset approached—and with it, our confrontation with Victor.

Derek pressed his forehead to mine. "We should go. The tunnels await."

As we slipped out of the study, I felt stronger than I had in years. No longer was I the frightened girl hiding her true nature. With Derek beside me and the truth in our hands, I was ready to face Victor and claim justice for our fathers.

The final battle was about to begin.

---
The eastern forest was dense with ancient pines, their shadows stretching long in the fading light. Derek and I moved silently through the underbrush, following a path only he seemed to know. After leaving his father's study, we had waited until dusk before slipping out of the mansion unnoticed.

"The council meeting will start soon," I whispered. "Won't they notice we're missing?"

Derek's eyes scanned the darkening woods. "Marcus will stall them. He knows what we're doing."
