Chapter 62

Aurora smiled, bobbing her head back and forth as she followed the lead of the aged butler. Her eyes were fixed straight ahead and the soft sound of their heels against the marble tiles echoed in the silence.
If there was one thing she loved about Natasha's house, it was the fact that each time she came here, it felt like she was being transported back in time.
She was envious that the girl was practically royalty. Asides that, her parents were quite liberal people. For example, her father wasn't the stuck up business man you would've imagined. No, Carlos Knight was a very prominent judge and he worked in the supreme court. Natasha's mother was also a popular model, the woman never seemed to age a day.
And then there was Natasha, the spirited, happy-go-lucky charmer who'd managed to become her best friend in a matter of days.
"Rory!"
Speaking of the devil
She swiveled in the direction of the voice, spotting the dark-haired female running towards her with outstretched arms.
"Hey, Nata-ommph!" Natasha jumped on her, the rest of her sentence finishing with a wheeze as the girl curled her arms around her neck, "Good to see you too," She said with a strained voice, patting her back.
When they parted, Aurora noticed the aggravated look the butler was shooting the vivacious female but either Natasha didn't notice or she simply chose not to.
"I'm fine, Mr. Cornwall," She quickly chipped in, smiling tersely but the man didn't seem to believe it.
He just cast her an apologetic look and muttered something along the lines of 'etiquette' and 'ladyship' before sauntering off.
Natasha giggled, interlocking their arms together, "Don't mind him, sometimes I wonder if he thinks we're still living in the mediaeval times."
Aurora smiled, "He's not wrong though, you almost popped a bone," She massaged her collarbone with a faux wince.
Natasha's eyes went wide instantly and she pulled them to a screeching halt, "Really? I didn't know I came at you so strong, let me see it. Where is it?"
Aurora stopped massaging and chuckled gently, slowly removing her arms from the other girl's, "I'm joking, it's alright. By the way, I didn't come to see you. Is your dad home?"
"My dad?"
"Yeah."
Natasha frowned, cocking her head to the side, "Why would you want to see him?"
Aurora sighed, "I scheduled a meeting with him earlier and he told me to come over. So, is he home or not?"
Natasha was quiet for a moment, simply accessing her with calculating gaze. Then she leaned forward to whisper conspiratorially,
"Are you already planning for a divorce?"
"What?" Aurora gawked, blinking rapidly in astonishment.
Natasha casually lifted a shoulder, "I heard it's a thing these days. Couples decide how long they want to stay married for and so prepare for a divorce beforehand. Isn't that what you came here for?"
Aurora threw her friend a flabbergasted look. How many times had she told her to stop reading those silly magazines?!
Where did she even get this idea from?
She shook her head, "Is he home or not, Nat?"
"You're lucky, he's upstairs. Go to the third room on your right and you'll find his office."
She smiled, patting her shoulder, "You're a lifesaver, Nat."
"I still don't think you should do this though, alimony isn't cheap these days and now it's actually given in reverse," Natasha whispered, all wide-eyed and concerned. She was actually concerned.
Aurora simply threw her friend a dubious look and nodded before sauntering off in search of the older Knight.
When she arrived in front of the office, she took in a deep breath, folded her fingers and tapped on the door twice.
The response was immediate, "Come in."
Aurora took another breath before twisting the handle and walking into the room, gently shutting the door behind her.
Carlos Knight was buried in a stack of papers and files and no, she didn't mean that he was literally buried but with how high each stack was, he was far from being covered in them.
He looked exactly like Natasha, with curly hair that had streak of grey lighting the strands fashionably and an olive tonned skin that seemed to have a glow of its own. He had large horn-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, his full attention on the manuscript in his hold.
"Aurora, please take a seat."
She wasn't even going to ask how he knew that she was the one. Although, it would make sense if she was the only person who had called to book an appointment with him.
So, Aurora settled on the office chair across from him, twisting her fingers nervously behind her purse. She had spoken to him the moment she found out about Evan's plot and he had taken quite a deep interest in the whole situation.
However, it was a miracle to keep him from spilling the tea to either of her parents since she feared that if Evan got a whiff of it, he would escape before they had the chance to punish him.
"Ah, I apologize for the mess," He looked up then, grinning warmly at her as he removed the glasses, "So, you brought the evidences I requested, right?"
She nodded, dipping her hand into her purse to bring out the small plastic bag that contained both pills. Aurora handed it to him, watching as he examined it quietly,
"I also have photos proving that he'd been religiously buying these drugs and intentionally replaced them with a drug of the same structure," Aurora provided, passing her phone to him as well.
He was silent, examining each of the items, "And you're sure he's the one behind this?"
"You listened to the recordings I sent you?"
He nodded.
Aurora sighed in relief, "Then it explains everything. Evan was driven by revenge towards my mom and has plotted to kill her, not once but twice. If we don't stop him now, he might end up succeeding."
Mr. Carlos nodded again, passing the phone back to her but keeping the drug on his table, "You do understand that if you go on with this, your brother will serve time."
She tilted her chin, "He deserves it," Her tone was emotionless and he frowned. "How many years are we talking about?"
"This is almost synonymous to attempted murder so five years max."
Aurora scrunched her brows, "What if I added stalking and secretly taking of private pictures?"
He arched a brow, surprise flashing in his orbs, "Well, he could be liable to fine-"
"I want to sue him," She interjected, trying to keep her voice as calm as possible, "He intruded on my privacy, threatened me and made me feel unsafe in my own house. I'll be damned if I allow him to go free with just a slap on the wrists," Aurora leaned forward, pinning him with a fierce stare,
"So tell me, what if added those?"
He breathed out, regarded her with renewed interest, "Seven years, that's as much as I can promise you."
Aurora's lips trembled and her head fell towards the ground. That was more than enough. She snapped her head back up, resolution stirring in her gut,
"Then tell me, what do I have to do now?"
