Chapter 93: You fucking legend
1005words
When we arrived at my parents, there were already a ton of people here. Did I miss what time it started? Shit. I think I did. That, or people were just excited and showed up early. Whatever the case was, I was glad that we weren't alone with them.
"Lynn!" Mom greeted excitedly as she ran over and hugged me. Then she surprised me by turning to Drake and touched his face. "I'm so glad you two came back. There's beer in the cooler and Dad has already fired up the grill. Make yourselves at home and mingle with family. They're all excited to see you, lynn! l." Then she was off to be the bubbly host everyone loved.
I wasn't expecting Mom to be so normal, but who was I kidding? She was always sweet. It was my dad I was worried about.
My eyes scanned the area and I found him over by the grill talking to Uncle George. I knew this would be a good time to go speak with him as I knew Uncle George would help break the ice.
I grabbed Drake's hand and tugged him along with me.
"Hi, Uncle George," I greeted with a smile.
His eyes went huge as he set his beer down and lifted me in a bear hug.
"My little lynn!" He exclaimed as he spun me in a circle and then set me back down next to Drake.
I laughed and tried to gain my footing again. "How are you?"
He grinned and shook his head. "Oh, you know me. Living the dream!" He always said that and being retired, I guess it would be a dream. Then his eyes turned to Drake and they went huge. "Holy shit!"
My heart involuntarily started to hammer as I looked between the two of them and then at my dad who was watching just intently as I was.
"No way!!" He waved to someone across the lawn to come over before he slapped Drake on the side of the shoulder. "I totally know you! Nick! Yeah! Drake Hudson!" He was so excited and I wanted to throw up.
This was not happening right now. I wanted to get my dad to like him and now Uncle George is reminding Dad exactly who Drake is.
My cousin Will walked over then and looked at Drake and instantly got excited.
"Oh, shit!!"
No. No. No.
"This guy is a fucking legend!" Will hollered, slapping Drake on the shoulder as my uncle had. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Without a word, Drake wrapped his arm around my shoulders and Will's eyes went huge.
"No way! You're here with my baby cousin?! That's so sick!" He sounded way too excited. "When is your next movie coming out?! You're my wife's favorite guy! She'll be here soon!"
I wanted to die from embarrassment as I turned and buried my face into his chest. He let out a small chuckle and I stole a glance at my dad. He didn't look amused at all and kept throwing daggers in Drake's direction. Great, so he wasn't cool like Mom yet.
"This guy must be fucking loaded!" Uncle George commented. "You going to those awards? I heard it's coming up soon. You've got our vote!"
"Ha, thanks," Drake replied shyly. "I, um, will probably be there."
"Whoa," Will said as he looked over toward the house.
My eyes followed his and saw Melissa walking out from the house with the whatever Aunt Sue was telling her. Instinctively, I wrapped an arm around Drakes waist to not only publicly claim him, but to hold on to steady myself.
My uncle and cousin were questioning Drake, but I was too distracted to hear what they were saying. And then I completely blanked them out when I saw Jason walking through the shrubbery to join the party with a six pack of beer in his hands.
I gripped Drake's side which caught his attention.
"What the fuck is he doing here?" Uncle George asked after his eyes followed mine.
Dad groaned. "Ah! Him and Melissa are seeing each other."
I felt my heart sink into my stomach and all the blood drained from my face. How could my own sister date my ex husband?! Isn't there some kind of unspoken understanding that you don't do that?!
"Looks like he got himself a nice shiner," Will commented. "Wish I was the one who gave it to him." Then Will stepped up on the other side of me as if to protect me also. "You cool, cousin? Want me to kick him the fuck out of here?"
I wanted to say yes but I couldn't speak. My mouth was dry and I was shaking. Drake held me tighter to his side before he whispered into my hair.
"Don't worry, I won't let him come within ten feet of you, Lynn."
And I believed him.
I watched Jason walk right up to my sister and lay a kiss on her lips. Even though I hated him with my whole being, it still stung to see my ex husband kissing my sister. Does she not know what he did to me for all those years?! Does she not know that he's not welcome here?! How is my dad staying so calm?!
I turned to my dad then and asked, "What the hell is he doing here?" He looked a bit guilty. "He's asked to marry your sister and since they got together, we've been able to see Conner. I-" he trailed off and looked away with even more guilt.
So they were letting this go down so they could see their grandchild? My sister is a twisted bitch! Anger filled my veins as I let go of Drake and marched in their direction.
"Shit," I heard Drake curse before his heavy footsteps pounded up behind me. He grabbed a hold of my waist and held me against him. "Where are you doing, babe?"
"To end this," I growled.
