There was frantic rustling inside.
I heard the other woman ask, "Is that her? Did she come back?"
Guilty conscience!

"Shouldn't be. I told her I went back to Seattle. She trusts me."
He said that, but he clearly wasn't sure. After all, he'd ignored my video call and my regular call.
It was normal for me to be suspicious.
He was right, though it sounded bitterly ironic now.
I had never doubted him.
If not for the earbud, I'd never have dreamed the jerk hadn't checked out and had brought another woman here.

Weren't they grossed out? Just this morning, I was in that bed. Couldn't they at least get a different room?
I bet they didn't even change the sheets. What kind of sick preference was that?
Since things were already broken beyond repair, I had nothing to lose.
I told Leo to start shoulder-charging the door while I yelled.

"You cheating jerk, open this door!"
Harper got into it too, shouting and kicking the door.
With all the racket in the middle of the night, the whole floor was probably awake.
I saw a few doors crack open, people peeking out.
The ones who didn't open were probably watching through their peepholes.
The door was seriously sturdy.
After several kicks from Leo and Harper, it didn't budge.
Furious, I gave it a kick too and nearly broke my toes.
Seeing the door holding, Harper's brain short-circuited.
"Should we use fire? Smoke them out?"
Leo immediately stopped her.
"Whoa, you can't do that. Starting a fire is arson!"
My ridiculous friend had lost all common sense for the sake of the drama.
"Then what? We can't get in. What if they just deny everything tomorrow?"
Leo looked at me.
"Don't worry. I came prepared."
He opened his toolbox.
Inside was a power drill.
The drone and gimbal I could understand.
But a power drill? What was he planning to drill?
I was starting to think this guy was like a real-life MacGyver.
There was no time to question it. I said to Leo, "Drill it! Drill the lock open!"
Leo rolled up his sleeves, grabbed the drill, and turned it on. It buzzed loudly.
The jerk and his fling must have heard the noise.
They were probably terrified. Round two was definitely off the table.
"What do we do, Bennett? They're getting in!"
Just as I thought we were about to break in, the elevator dinged on the 5th floor.
Several people got out and stopped us.
